Battlefield 2 WZ-10: In contrast to the US and Russia, China had never had a dedicated attack helicopter. Enter the WZ-10. In development since the mid-1990s, the helicopter was specifically designed to swiftly eliminate enemy ground forces. A somewhat non-traditional attack helicopter, pilots sit side by side as they operate the WZ-10’s controls and weapons systems.
Its munitions include: 57mm multi-barrel rockets, the HJ-73 “Red Arrow” anti-tank missile, and a 23mm machine gun mounted in the helicopter’s nose. Built with radar absorbent material and bullet-proof glass and featuring numerous countermeasure devices the WZ-10 is also more than capable of defending itself. Until full production of the WZ-10 offset their numbers, foreign-made helicopters composed the majority of the PLA Air Force’s inventory.
US intelligence sources indicate that the WZ-10 has an optics system that relays sensor/flight information to the pilot’s helmets and it controls which direction the machine gun is aiming. The PLA plans to upgrade the WZ-10 with infrared exhaust suppression which will protect the helicopter from heat-seeking missiles.
