The Support class joined the all-out war party when Battlefield 2 came along in 2005. Alongside the game’s 6 other classes, the basic duties of the Support were similar to what they are now: provide suppressive fire and resupply teammates using Ammo Boxes.
The Light Machine Gun was the signature weapon for the class and those who wielded it had to master both bullet spread and cool down of this powerful firearm. Support players in Battlefield 2 were also equipped with a body armor, basically turning their starting health to 133%.
